hi, i downloaded several images and tried to install them on my laptop. it is a pure old pII/266mx with 96mB ram and nice sympatic disc of 2gB (halfe of it for ?nix). nothing proprietary is in this box. i already installed suse6, redhat, rock1.[4-6] and so on. only w95 sucks on it eventhough a big sticker says "designed for windose...". ok back to my weekend work - proper reporting of the installation processes. i have got a whole set of images a rock beta6 desktop and minimal, and the new camp image and the new . ups.. here is gentoo and a mandrake fooling around as well. all images were checked after download. only cd2/desktop/beta6 had a different checksum - never mind - the image is clean and that's important. ok - let us start with the minimal beta6: after booting it shows the nice boot screen and goes thru the loader process. the 1st stage boot end with the question . i decide for <5> as it is my fortune number and then the 1 for cd. the next problem i dont need to waste time for thinking. there is a , my favored decision - a real YES installation. and the minimal rock died with . never mind there are is some other cds fooling around on my desk. i give the computer a 5 minute break just for making sure he is forgetting the recent adventure. i feed him the desktop beta6 and give him full power again. same startup screen and continues after a short time - just fine for writing the protocoll - great. 1st stage is loaded as well. as it worked fine last time i don't change my mind - 5 again and 1 for cd and the default. insmod: /lib/modules/2.4.21-rock/kernel/fs/minix/minix.o ... failed insmod: ...nls_iso8859-1.o ...failed insmod: ...nls_iso8859-1.o ...failed Extracting 2nd stage filesystem to ram ... gzip: stdin: I/O error tar: Unexpected EOF on archive file tar: Child returned status 1 tar: Error exit delayed from previous errors Can't find /mnt_root/linuxrc! power off and to the next coffee break. so - to the camp version i downloaded last night. thank god - you found the vanished images. same procedure. i remember same error as in beta5 version of desktop. no problem i contact the mentioned installation guide in order to get the necessary information. And there is <>. i'll have a try with . wwwaaaaaau it goes to kmod: failed to exec /sbin/modprobe -s -k nls_iso8859-1, errno =2 read_super_block: can't find a reiserfs filesystem on (dev 03:02, block 64, size 1024 read_super_block: .... Kernel panic: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on 03:02 power off and to a nice beer - that will help - makes me brave and less nervous. if it does help to me i'll have the next ones with my laptop. next is the mandrake 9.1. it boot nicely. o god, that installation is time consuming. if it will continue with this speed - i'll run out of ..?.. the installation procedure might unnecessarily slow, but it is working - and after a hours time the linux version is installed. some questions - what do you think ? - how many of the poeple is downloading your images and goes the described way. get a bad image of rock and --- tell all world about the bad experience with rock? - what is the cause of i was not able to install the rock images (i downloaded mandrake as i did with rock, same way, same hw) ? - how much brave do i need to get rock installed? (8 coffee, 4 beers, 2 château, 1 jonny) what motivation could make me try to install a rock-linux over a running installation? i can live with all at&d and bsd systems. what would you do? sorry for my english - obviously not my native language :-)) have fun george -- To unsubscribe from this list: send a mail with the subject "unsubscribe rock-linux" to .
