I'm just testing how to update gcc and glibc in 1.6.0 03:32 < esden> why that? 03:32 < huebi> I think I must update gcc to 3.2.2 on the build system and then I can build glibc 2.3.. 03:32 < huebi> faster binaries 03:33 < huebi> and gcc 3.x is needed for x86-64 03:33 < esden> you think that it is nessesary? 03:33 < esden> do you have one? 03:34 < huebi> gcc 3.x is needed for x86-64, definitly! - I'm on the issue to get one. 03:35 < esden> don't you think that bringin out stable is more importaint then such heavy changes? 03:35 < esden> or have you dropped the idea of stable? 03:36 < huebi> This are only a few package updates - To get some bootable CD images is the real problem 03:37 < esden> so why not invest time in that problem instead of updating packages? (only as a note I do not want to upset you or so ... I am only curious) 03:37 < huebi> most of the fixes for gcc and glibc are done in 1.7, so it's not a big problem to update them. 03:38 < huebi> esden: I apeciate your patches for the CD images :->> 03:38 < huebi> +r 03:39 < esden> excuse me but I will not invest time in 1.6 ... 03:39 < esden> but I think I will take an other look on it 03:39 < esden> perhups I will change my mind ... 03:40 < huebi> I can only invest a limited amount of time in this annoying CD-Image issue. 03:42 < huebi> The idea of supporting i386 to i686 with only one boot image does not work. 03:42 < esden> that is why I would (in your place) not invest my time in backporting the new glibc and gcc to 1.6 03:43 < esden> why does it not work? 03:43 < huebi> I don't know. If I knew, it would have been fixed. I want to change the standard boot image to a huge ram disk 03:44 < huebi> Also automatic hardware "Erkennung" would be very nice. 03:45 < esden> but not really nessesary 03:45 < esden> not nessesary for stabelizing 1.6 03:46 < huebi> For you and, it is not. But for not that skilled users, it is a must. 03:46 < huebi> +me 03:46 < huebi> 1.6 is stable since a long time. only bootable cd-images are missing 03:47 < esden> that is nessesary for stable 1.6 03:47 < esden> do it and release 1.6 stable 03:47 < huebi> ack 03:47 < esden> and then you can add stuff like hardwaredetection and update glibc/gcc 03:48 < huebi> 03:38 < huebi> esden: I apreciate your patches for the CD images :->> 03:48 < esden> not if you are going to update glibc/gcc what will break 1.6 for other several months 03:48 < huebi> what should it break? 03:49 < huebi> s/should/could 03:50 < esden> it will break 100% because it is a core stuff ... 03:50 < esden> invest your time where it is nessesary : CD images 03:50 < huebi> I mean whickh packages do fail then, which are not fixed in 1.7 03:51 < esden> porting that fixes also needs time ... 03:51 < esden> but do what you think is importaint ... I said what I think about it 03:52 < huebi> I apreciate your patches for the CD images 03:52 < esden> you are repeating yourself 03:53 < huebi> Yes, I still got no patches for the CDs from you :-) 03:53 < huebi> ...or somebody else 03:53 < esden> why from me ... you have time to do it but you are burning it doing unimportaint stuff ... like the update 03:55 < huebi> esden: The updates of the packages are easy and they should only need at the most 2 days. The cd images need more time. And I have still invested very much time in them. Why should I do all this stuff alone? 03:57 < esden> because of missmenagement you lost people that are willing to help you? 03:58 < huebi> esden: Explain yourself, please 04:00 < esden> most people that were willing to help you went away because you wanted to add new features to 1.6 instead of fixing stuff... and doing updates wehre it is not nessesary (nessesary updates are security updates not feature updates) ... 04:01 < esden> I really appreciate that you documented the code ... but I really have to admit that it could be done in 1.6.1 and later 04:01 < esden> that is also wrongly invested time at the moment it has been done 04:03 < esden> functionality had to be fixed first ... and that everything compiles and creates installable cd's ... then a stable release ... then you could document stuff ... and make minor updates and feature additions 04:03 < esden> that is how I see it ... perhups I am wrong ... if it is so please correct me 04:04 < esden> ok ... running ./scripts/Download in 1.6 04:06 < huebi> One point I think you're missing is, that there were many bugs in the scripts. The CD-imagesdepend on a working kernel, which supports all of the hardware. The kernel is now fixed but the CD-images are still a big problem 04:07 < huebi> The package updates were not a problem with only a few exceptions 04:08 < esden> if there were no updates then alse there would be no exceptions ... 04:08 < esden> yes the bugs had to be fixed that is correct 04:09 < huebi> autoconf/automake were one nessesary exception 04:10 < esden> nessesary? 04:10 < huebi> because of updates of buggy packaes which then needed a new autoconf version 04:10 < huebi> +g 04:12 < esden> that could be fixed with patches ... it is dirty but less time consuming ... 04:16 < esden> Downloading base-archive/dhcp/dhcp-3.0pl1.tar.bz2 ... 04:16 < esden> File not found, making a note of it. 04:18 < huebi> esden: It's updated here locally. there is an exploit in that old package. 04:19 < esden> kk 04:22 < huebi> esden: Do I need to compile glibc 2.3.2 with gcc 3.2.2? 04:24 < esden> do not know ... but I do not think so 04:24 < huebi> hmmm ... testing 04:25 < huebi> esden: Do you know how to fix that does not work in the command line?
