The ROCK Linux project has been discontinued in 2010. Here are the old data for the historical record!

History of the release>

dRock Picture After releasing dRock 1.4.0 in the December 2001. We found some bugs and many outdated packages. We also got some inspiration from other people at the 18C3.

The 1.4.1 version contains the same core components (kernel, glibc, gcc) as the 1.4.0 release, but nearly all the other packages (from file-utils, all gnome packages, mozilla, grub, lilo ... to XFree) are updated! - And the known bugs are also fixed. The 1.4.1 release is also installable over a network (via ftp or http). Also some package like WindowMaker, BlackBox, Evolution, ispell-dictonaries ... got added. - We also replaced the old-style lpd-based Printing System with CUPS!

1.4.1 was released on February the 21th.

How do I install dRock?

Generic dRock installation instructions
You need a 2.4.x kernel (with devfs enabled), glibc-2.1.x and the lib-tools-1.4.x on your host system if you like to compile dRock from scratch!

Errata of 1.4.1 (final)

- Mew's /usr/bin/mewinc is not executeable. I you want to use your local Unix mailbox with mew, execute: "chmod +x /usr/bin/mewinc"

- Cups tries to store temporary files, needed mostly when data is piped into lpr, in /var/tmp. But this directory doesn't exist in dRock which causes this usage of lpr to fail. The simpliest solution is to create a sym-link: "ln -s /tmp /var/tmp" - an alternative is to recompile Cups to use /tmp.

- The new usb init script tries to modprobe the usb and input kernel modules. But they are compiled into the shipped kernel, which leads to oopses (which should not happen anyway ...) and a really strange behaving kernel afterwards: It locks randomly and the keyboard/mouse devices dies on XFree startup, ... So either do not use the init script, comment the modprobes out or compile a kernel with modular USB support.

- The KMathplot package is empty. This is because I forgot the "make install" in the auto-build script. Sorry. You have to compile it yourself, or download the binary archive from a latest snapshot.
