Ok, there is hope in form of an unofficial patch to the orinoco
driver. The output will look like this:

$ iwlist eth1 scan
 eth1 Scan completed :
 Cell 01 - Address: 00:09:5B:A9:AB:68
 ESSID:"pandamon2"
 Mode:Managed
 Frequency:2.462GHz
 Quality:64/92 Signal level:-38 dBm Noise level:-103 dBm
