Welcome to ROCK Linux - The Distribution Build Kit
What is ROCK Linux? |
---|
ROCK Linux is a flexible Distribution Build Kit. It can be used for building your own Linux distributions. Read more.. |
Do you also have pre-compiled ISOs? |
Yes. There are pre-compiled ISOs for some ROCK Linux based distributions at the Distribution Portal. But always keep in mind that ROCK Linux is a Distribution Build Kit and can be used to build a wide range of distributions. So you should consider carefully which ROCK Linux based distribution you want to download. |
I just want a simple general-purpose distribution. |
Then you should try Crystal ROCK. |
Where can I find information about security updates? |
We have a page with a list of Security Updates. You can subscribe to the rock-user mailing list as well and receive security information via email. |
How do I build my own distribution using ROCK Linux? |
The build process itself is easy and described here. |
But when you want to create your own distribution you might need to add some features to ROCK Linux. The ROCK Linux internal APIs are described in the Manual. |
Is it possible to build ROCK on non-ROCK distributions such as Debian, SuSE or RedHat? |
Yes. But building on Crystal ROCK is the best tested scenario. |
What architectures do you support? |
Alpha AXP, ARM, HPPA-RISC, IA-64, MIPS, PowerPC, Sparc, x86 and x86_64. |
But currently we only provide pre-built Crystal ROCK binaries for x86, x86_64 and PowerPC. |
Why is it all written in shell?
Why not rewrite it in Ruby, Python, C++ or Java? |
We have chosen shell scripting as the programming language for the ROCK Linux Build System because:
So far it has been a good choice and we see no reason for rewriting it in any other programming language. |
Is this the entire FAQ? |
No. More FAQs can be found here. |
